It Started with an Umbrella and Four Boards
In 2015, Marea Surf School started on Sayulita's main beach with nothing more than an umbrella for shade, four surfboards, and the idea that a surf school should feel like more than a transaction.
The idea was simple: treat every person who walks in like family, not a customer. Give them a real experience — good coaching, genuine attention, and a feeling that this place actually cares whether they catch a wave or not.
A decade later, we've swapped the umbrella for a surf shop in the center of town. But the idea hasn't changed. Same small team, same warm welcome, same genuine excitement to get you in the water.

What We Do
Marea is a surf school — that's the core of what we do. We teach beginners to pop up for the first time, help intermediate surfers read waves and generate speed, and take surfers to the best breaks along the Punta de Mita coastline.
We offer surf lessons at Sayulita Beach and at La Lancha, guided surf trips to La Lancha and Bahia, and surfboard rentals for those who want to explore on their own. We also work with local friends who run experiences we trust — from the Marietas Islands to cooking classes and jungle hikes — for guests who want to see more of Sayulita beyond the water.
Why Sayulita?
Sayulita is a small surf town on Mexico's Riviera Nayarit, about 40 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. It has consistent waves, warm water year-round, and the kind of relaxed energy that makes it very hard to leave.
It's also genuinely one of the best places in Mexico to learn to surf — the main beach has a forgiving beginner break, the surrounding coastline has some excellent intermediate and advanced spots, and the town itself is small enough that you actually get to know the people who live here.
We've been here since 2015. We're not going anywhere.
