How Much Do Surf Lessons Cost in Sayulita?

If you’re planning a trip and wondering what to budget for a surf lesson, here’s the short answer for our school: a 90-minute beginner lesson in Sayulita starts from 1,200 pesos per person. The exact price depends on how many of you there are.

Why the price changes with group size

The more people who learn together, the more the cost is shared. Couples and families usually come out ahead here, and learning together is half the fun. There’s something about watching your partner fall off a board that makes your own falls feel a lot less embarrassing.

If you’re on your own, you still get an instructor in the water with you. You just don’t have anyone to split it with.

What you should get for that price

Wherever you end up booking, a beginner lesson should include a few basics. A good one gives you:

  • A large, soft board. Not a small one, even if it looks better in photos. Size gives you stability.

  • A leash as long as your board, so the board stays close when you fall without getting in your way.

  • A rash guard to protect your skin from the board and the sun.

  • An instructor in the water with you, not shouting tips from the sand.

  • Enough time. Ninety minutes is a good length for a first lesson. Less than an hour often isn’t enough to get comfortable, and after two hours most beginners are too tired to paddle.

  • A spot chosen for the conditions. The ocean changes every day, so the lesson time and place should change with it.

With us, the board, leash, rash guard and instructor are all part of the price.

Choosing your lesson time

You’re welcome to pick a time when you book. What we recommend, though, is letting us set it. The day before your lesson, we look at the tide and the waves and choose the window that gives you the best chance to learn. Tell us if you prefer morning or afternoon, or if you have plans to work around, and we’ll fit the lesson in where we can.

How paying works

You pay a deposit online when you book. The rest you pay in person at the surf school on the day, in cash or by card.

Coming for more than one day?

Most people who take a first lesson want another one. Your body starts to understand the pop-up somewhere around the second or third session, and that’s when it starts to feel like surfing. That’s why we offer 3-day and 5-day packages, with a lower price per lesson.

Already surfed before?

Our standard lessons take place in Sayulita’s beginner area. If you can already catch and ride waves on your own, you’ll get more out of 1-on-1 coaching in the main break. Send us a message and we’ll help you figure out what fits.
